Fado

Fado, a unique form of Portuguese music, has captured the world’s attention lately, with the success of the divas Cristina Branco and Mariza, among others. Its drama and bold expression is perhaps seen as an antidote to the mechanical pop on the radio, or the jaded underground music of our times.

Fado was born in Alfama, the oldest neighborhood in Lisbon, with the crossing of spirited Portuguese song and the British sailor’s favorite guitarra (a resonant, double steel-stringed instrument). The form of song called fado can trace its roots back to various influences slave and sailor songs, or perhaps to Moorish, even minstrel music, but only achieved its “modern form” in the mid 1800s.

During the 1950s and 1960s, fado reached a great peak in popularity, with the interpretations of the most famous diva, Amália Rodrigues. Portugal of that time (and some argue today) could be characterized by the three “F”s: Fado, Futebol and Fatima.

If there is any doubt about whether men sing fado, let it be know that it is one of the more manly activities. It takes real strength and machismo to sing a good fado song, and often a lot of red wine!

In Lisbon, there are essentially three ways to experience fado. And we mean experience, as fado has its own fascinating and engaging sub-culture in which the audience often interacts with the singers.

The Professional Restaurant

A number of restaurants in Alfama feature a rotating line-up of professional singers. Expect to have a nice long dinner listening to fado, with long musical sets. Pros have a greater repertoire and often speak other languages and can interact with customers. Respect is a key word in these venues, talking is to a minimum during the music in professional restaurants.

Fado Vadio

The fado vadio, or “open mic” fado experience: A greater number of restaurants in Alfama rely on a never ending supply of local amateur fado talent. In any given evening, they will welcome singers to have a couple of glasses of red wine, and sing a couple of tunes. This is more spontaneous, and sometimes a bit riotous, including children and grandparents. While the “amateurs” are on, don’t expect to have a chatty time either, then can be even more prima donna!

Tasca Experience

Rua Diário de Notícias nº39 - Bairro Alto
Fado every Monday and Wednesday

The Tasca experience: In Bairro Alto, a famous venue for fado remains the Tasca do Chico, a cozy “whole in the wall” tavern that has its own brand of open mic. If you would like to sit down, arrive early, before 9pm. Instead of a full meal, there you can sip sangria the whole night, and when you get hungry eat the lovely caldo verde soup. This is a great option for those with commitment-phobia or a tight budget.
