Jeronimos Monastery

Praça do Império

Although the construction of the Monastery was
begun in 1501 during the reign of D. Manuel I., it
took almost a century to finish. Its architecture
style varies from the late Gothic to the Renaissance
denominated by the unique Manueline decoration.
The building commemorates the Golden Age of the
Portuguese Discoveries and is a symbol of
Portuguese culture and national identity was
classified a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1984.

Church - free. Cloister and its other parts - 4.5€

Castelo de São Jorge

Castelo de São Jorge 1100 - 129 Lisboa


The Castle is located on the top of the highest hill
of the city, the highest from Lisbon’s 7s hills. It
was built as a fortress by Visigoths in the 5th
century, later became the fortification of the
Moors, in 1147 was sacked by the first king of
Portugal D.Afonso Henriques. It was badly damaged
in the earthquake of 1755. Its reconstruction was
started in the ´60s of the 20th century during the
dictatorship of Salazar. It offers an extraordinary
view over the city and the Tagus river.

March to October 9am -9pm, November to
February 9am – 6pm. Closed on holidays: 1st

National Pantheon

Campo de Santa Clara

The construction of this Baroque church started in
1682 and was just finished 284 years later. Well,
it was worth waiting for so long since today this
monument is one of Lisbon`s most impressive
landmarks. The interior is built from marble, the
roof is a giant dome from where you can have a
breathtaking view after climbing 187 stairs or
enjoying the convenience of the elevator. Today
the church, known as the National Pantheon,
housing cenotaphs of Portuguese heroes.

Schedule
Tuesday to Sunday 10am to 5pm. Closed on
Mondays and public holidays.

Torre de Belém

Praça do Império


The tower is a great example of the 15th century
military architecture of the Manueline style. Its
main function was to guard the entrance of the
harbor. Today, with no doubt, the monument is
the symbol of Lisbon and the Golden Age of
Discoveries. With its historical and cultural
values it rightly became part of the UNESCO
World Heritage in 1983.

This huge limestone monument was erected in
1960 to commemorate the death of Prince Henry
de Navigator, promoter of the discoveries. The
memorial has a shape of a caravel and presents
33 figures, famous Portuguese such as: Henry de
Navigator on the front Vasco da Gama, Luís de
Camões. This sight is a replica, the original was built
as a temporary monument for the Exhibition of
Portuguese World to represent the 5 continents.

Schedule

sé Catedral

Largo da Sé

The Romanesque cathedral was built in the 12th
century by the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso
Henriques soon after he recaptured the city from
the Moors. It was built on top of the ruins of an old
mosque to emphasize the power of Christianity.
Its gothic cloister is a scene of excavation.
