Located at the other side of the Tagus river, at 113 meters above sea level, the Cristo E statue has the best possible view over Lisbon’s skyline. The monument is an imitation of Rio de Janeiro’s Cristo Redeemer, which had impressed the Cardinal of Lisbon, leading the church to promise the construction of a similar one if Portugal was spared during World War II. The statue was inaugurated in 1959, and nowadays is considered an ex-libris of the city.
